Creating Urgency & Accountability

Have you ever worked with a client who totally got the plan, but didn’t follow through?
You gave them everything they needed—strategy, structure, support—but at the end of the program, they hadn’t taken meaningful action.
And in moments like that, it’s normal to wonder:
“Am I really helping them as much as I could be?”
Over the last 6 years of working with Christian coaches and entrepreneurs, I’ve learned that transformation doesn’t come from information alone.
It comes when you help your clients build two things:
-
Urgency – A deep personal reason to act now
-
Accountability – A clear path to follow through and stay consistent
Let’s talk about how to help your clients build both.
✅How to Create Urgency (Without Pressure)
Urgency isn’t about high-pressure tactics. It’s about helping your clients see that what they want matters and that the time to pursue it is now.
Here are three ways to build healthy urgency:
-
Start With Vision
Ask: “What does success look like for you in this area of your life?”
When people speak their vision aloud, they connect emotionally and urgency starts to rise. -
Explore the Cost of Inaction
Ask: “If nothing changes, what will this cost you six months from now?”
This helps them realize the cost of staying stuck and brings intention to their desire to move forward. -
Create a Time-Based Next Step
Don’t leave progress open-ended. Ask: “What’s one thing you could do this week to begin moving forward?”
Urgency is born when people realize waiting is the real risk.
✅How to Build Accountability That Sticks
Accountability is about more than weekly check-ins. It’s about helping your clients become the kind of people who follow through.
Here’s how to do that well:
-
Let Them Speak Their Commitment Aloud With You Or Others
Ask: “What are you committing to this week and why does it matter to you?”
When people say it out loud, it becomes real. -
Track Their Progress
Whether it’s a planner, shared doc, or a simple checklist—get it out of their head and into a visual system.
(Side note: We created the Christian Coach Planner for this exact reason. You’ll get one free when joining one of our programs.) -
Celebrate Follow-Through, Not Just Results
Honor the process. Say things like:
“You kept your word and that matters.”
“You showed up. That’s leadership.”
When we celebrate character over outcome, we reinforce the identity shift they need to grow.
So here’s the lesson I want you to take away from this:
Just like we want our clients to act on what they know is right, we need to do the same for ourselves.
If there's something you know God is calling you to do today to become who you're meant to be… don’t wait three weeks to do it.
Don’t wait three months.
Certainly don’t wait three years.
Start now.
