Opportunity Vs Threat
Picture this...
You have all the gifts, all the talent, all the love for your clients, BUT when it comes to reaching out to prospects... You feel overwhelmed, scared of rejection, terrified of judgment, and even a simple "NO" feels devastating.
One of my clients told me exactly this last week, and honestly, I've been there, too.
That's why I want to share something my wife, Kara, taught me. She's a psychology professor (she worked at the Air Force Academy and now teaches at Concordia University), and she shared a concept that completely changed how I see adversity in business.
Here's What She Taught Me
Kara explained that we can perceive any adversity in one of two ways:
As a THREAT (danger, something to avoid)
As an OPPORTUNITY (challenge, something to embrace)
When we see prospecting, sales calls, or objections as threats, our brain goes into fight-or-flight mode. We panic. We avoid. We procrastinate.
But when we see them as opportunities? Everything changes.
Here are 3 Questions That Will Transform Your Mindset:
Question #1: "What am I currently labeling as a threat in my business?"
Take a moment right now. What are you avoiding? What makes your stomach turn?
- Prospecting messages?
- Sales calls?
- Following up?
- Handling objections?
Write it down. Get specific.
Question #2: "What if this 'threat' is actually my greatest opportunity?"
When I was 18, my sales mentor told me my phone was like an ATM machine. Every time I dialed those 10 digits, I was literally tapping into my future income.
How can you see things from another perspective?
Question #3: "How can I rewrite the story I'm telling myself?"
Start by noticing your language and reframing it:
Instead of: "What if they reject me?"
Try: "What if this conversation changes their life?"
Instead of: "What if they judge me?"
Try: "What if they've been waiting for someone exactly like me?"
Instead of: "What if they say no?"
Try: "What if this 'no' leads me to the perfect 'yes'?"
Here's the truth: When you hide from opportunities disguised as threats, you're not just hurting your business. You're robbing someone of the transformation they desperately need.
That prospect who needs your help? They're not sitting there hoping you'll leave them alone. They're hoping someone will care enough to reach out and offer them hope.
What's ONE "threat" you're ready to turn into an opportunity this week?
God has placed incredible gifts inside you, and the world is waiting for you to step into the opportunities He's prepared for you.
