Responding to the “Spouse Objection”

Let’s talk about something we’ve all heard on a call before: “I need to talk to my spouse.”

Now, before we go further—yes, I’m all for spouses making decisions together. I believe God calls us into unity in marriage, and that means we do life and make choices as one.

But let’s be honest… sometimes that statement is sincere, and sometimes it’s just a gentler way of saying “no.”

So how do we respond to both situations with integrity?

Let’s walk through it.

➡️ Understand What’s Really Being Said

When someone says they need to talk to their spouse, it could mean:

  • They genuinely need alignment with their partner.
  • Or, they’ve already decided not to move forward, but blaming their spouse feels easier than being direct.

That’s why curiosity matters more than persuasion.

➡️ My Go-To Objection Handling Framework

  • Validate their desire to involve their spouse:
“Totally get it. I’d have that conversation with my spouse, too. This is a big decision.”
  • Ask:
“Have you made your decision for you yet?”
  • If yes → Schedule a follow-up decision call
“Awesome. When would be a good time to reconnect? Tomorrow or Thursday?”
  • If not → Get curious and isolate the real objection
“Got it. Can you share what’s still holding you back?”

Sales is never about pushing. It’s about partnering. When someone brings an objection, you’re not on opposite sides, you’re sitting next to them, guiding them toward the best decision for their life and family.
